Toolbox Talk: Looking After Your Body to Protect Your Mind

At a Glance

Physical and mental health are inseparable. Regular movement, good nutrition and managing pain all directly affect mood, concentration and resilience. Construction work is physically demanding, but chronic pain, poor diet and inactivity outside work hours have a big impact on how you feel mentally. Small improvements in physical health have a big impact on how you feel mentally.

In the Ownminder App · Physical Wellbeing + Managing Mood & Mindset

Ownminder's Physical Wellbeing tools target sleep, movement and recovery; Managing Mood & Mindset tools support the mental side of physical health.

  • Move It!: Movement is the fastest way to break down cortisol and adrenaline in your body. Even a 20-minute walk qualifies, the app helps you build it as a daily habit.
  • Sleep Hygiene: Physical recovery happens during sleep. The Sleep Hygiene tool gives practical dos and don'ts tailored to the patterns common in construction workers.
  • Grounding, Feet Grounding & Water: Simple on-site grounding techniques, press your feet into the floor, drink a glass of water, that reset the nervous system during a physical flare.
  • Binaural Beats: In the Unwind & De-Stress section: audio that helps the brain enter a relaxed state, supporting pain management and recovery during rest breaks.

Discussion Questions

  1. The CIRIA C782 framework identifies the physical environment as one of four domains of wellbeing. On a scale of 1 to 10, how well do the welfare facilities on this site support healthy habits, and what one thing would make the biggest difference?
  2. What's realistic for looking after physical health on a busy construction site?
  3. What's available on-site for meals and hydration, and is it good enough?
  4. Do you or your colleagues have ongoing physical issues affecting mood and work?
  5. What could the team do collectively to build better physical habits?
  6. What's one small physical health change you'll commit to this week?

Recognising the Signs

Signals that physical health may be suffering include: persistent tiredness beyond normal fatigue, relying on daily painkillers, significant weight changes, low energy during and after shifts, and no motivation for anything outside work. Long-term musculoskeletal problems, back pain, joint issues, are both a physical and mental health risk if left unaddressed. CIRIA C782 section 6 sets minimum standards for welfare facilities including lighting, thermal comfort, rest space and access to healthy food. L&G's programme includes a welfare facility audit against these standards. Your physical environment is not just a comfort issue, it is a legal psychosocial risk management obligation under ISO 45003:2021.

Things to Try

Open Ownminder and go to Physical Wellbeing for personalised guidance. On-site habits that make an immediate difference:

  • Hydrate throughout the shift, even mild dehydration reduces concentration
  • Eat a proper meal before your shift, avoid relying on high-sugar snacks
  • Stretch during breaks, particularly backs, shoulders and wrists
  • Report musculoskeletal pain early, far easier to treat before it becomes chronic
  • Walk 20 minutes outside work hours at least 3 times a week, the most evidence-backed mood booster available

Improved Energy

Good nutrition and movement sustain energy through demanding shifts without the crash.

Stronger Mental Health

Even a short daily walk measurably reduces anxiety and depression symptoms.

Fewer Days Off

Workers who maintain physical health take fewer sick days and recover faster.
